Recycled Plastic Boardwalk Amongst Flooded River Banks

Spelthorne Council Boardwalk

The initial ask was to install a footpath- a project for which had been quoted two years ago. However, over this period, the nearby river overflowed, submerging the site for a staggering 18 months. As a result, a conventional footpath was out of the question.

In response to this challenge, it was proposed to use Revive Recycled Plastic Boardwalk. This choice ensured that the public footpath could remain accessible even during periods of flooding.

The boardwalk itself was crafted from Revive Recycled Plastic, made with 100% recycled plastic. To securely anchor the boardwalk despite the challenging ground conditions caused by the flooding, galvanized ground screws were used. This method eliminated the need for traditional posts, which are impractical to install in flooded areas due to water-filled holes, rendering them nearly impossible to secure.

The installation process spanned 8 to 10 weeks, during which the 245-meter long boardwalk was completed. For added safety and visibility during potential flooding events, a handrail along one side of the boardwalk was incorporated. This feature not only ensures that the path remains accessible, but also provides walkers with support and reassurance during extreme weather conditions.
